Yuwaku

About Yuwaku

In 2024, my home and studio in Wajima were lost in the Noto Peninsula earthquake. Out of that loss came a new beginning: I have relocated my studio to Yuwaku Onsen, a mountain hot spring village on the outskirts of Kanazawa.

Once a retreat for samurai and poets, Yuwaku has long been cherished for its quiet beauty, healing waters, and rich cultural atmosphere. Just 30 minutes from central Kanazawa, it feels worlds away — a place where time slows, the seasons are vivid, and tradition lives gently alongside nature.

Here, surrounded by forests that change colour with the seasons, I continue my journey with urushi. Visitors are welcome to experience the art of Japanese lacquer in an intimate setting that reflects both resilience and renewal.

Whether you come for the hot springs, the history, or the art, Yuwaku offers a chance to step into a slower rhythm — and perhaps see lacquer in a new light.

Tours and workshops

For educational purposes I can offer a limited number of local tours for those interested to know more about Wajima-nuri and the local history of Yuwaku. A unique maki-e workshop can also be arranged as part of a tour or by itself. As this is an authentic experience, the workshop requires two hours and on completion you will have your own piece of original Wajima-nuri art to take home with you. All materials are provided but advanced booking is necessary.
